Battering is A CRIME
No one has the right to hit you or threaten you.
If a family member or intimate partner has harmed you, you have the right to ask for legal protection from the police and / or the courts.
The police can help you:
* get to a safe place away from the violence.
* get medical care for injuries you may have.
* get free copies of the police reports.
* get information on where the courts are in your area, and on how to file a criminal complaint or Family Court petition.
* find out where to go for more help.
* get any necessary personal belongings from your home, such as clothing, or medication.
Criminal Court And Civil Court
There are two types of courts that are available to provide protection to victims of domestic violence - criminal and civil. Family Court is a civil court with the goal of protecting you and your family. If you are eligible to go to Family Court, you have the option of going to Criminal Court, or both at the same time. |
